-Create and introduce an argument (precise claim/thesis) and distinguish the claim from alternative or opposing claims

-Develop the claim and supply evidence (direct quotations, paraphrase, or summary) for each writing point

-Provide unique and orginal analysis of evidence cited that proves a thorough understanding of the research topic

-Acknowledge any opposing viewpoints on the topic and provoide relevant counterarguments

-Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone (no 1st/2nd person pronouns)

-Include both in-text citations AND a works cited page for all referenced materials

(CCSS Appendix C: Examples of Student Writing)

*NOTE: The goal of a research paper is very similar to that of an analytical piece. Instead of analyzing a piece of literature however (a novel, short story, literary critique), you are analyzing various research materials (primary/seconday sources, periodicals, web sources, etc.).
